Black
Elephant Film Series
The black elephant film series kicked off in January
2007 in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. Local
artists Shelley Barry and Anthea Carolus have set out to
revolutionise the way independent, alternative cinema is
screened.
Moving away from traditional cinema venues, the series
will take cinema to the people by projecting films in
unusual spaces such as shopping malls, against
buildings, walls, houses, in homes and offices, amongst
others.
Utilising a mobile screen and projector, the series will
travel extensively throughout South Africa. After
completing film studies in the USA, Shelley Barry has
returned to her roots to develop the local film industry
and to distribute and share her award winning films,
which will be the content for the first film series.
Other films planned for the next series include films
from local and international filmmakers.
Based on the concept of the “tupperware party”, home
screenings will involve a host who invites friends to
his/her home for an intimate screening and discussion
with the director of the films. Screenings will also be
held at offices and organizations and look out for
projections against walls and buildings in the city. All
screenings are donation based. The series is a project
of twospinningwheels productions, an Eastern Cape
production and publishing company.
To host a private screening, please contact series
co-ordinator, Anthea Carolus @ 0782152647 or if you have
a film to share, contact Shelley Barry, series curator @

The Black Elephant Film Series will regularly host
workshops on film in the Metropole and elsewhere in
South Africa.
